Doula
Throughout history women have been surrounded by other women during
childbirth and a Birth Doula is the modern manifestation.
There are also Postpartum Doulas who are there to provide care
(breastfeeding support and assistance in the home) to the new family
after the birth.
The presence of a Birth Doula will bring a steady support to the
laboring woman and partner that include:
- Physical positioning for increased comfort
- Massage
- Emotional support, encouragement and reassurance
- Informational reference
Studies have shown that having a Doula at the side of a laboring woman
can reduce the use of drugs and other medical interventions, speed up
the birth process, and increase the chances for mom to come away with a
more positive out look on the experience.
